That logic is dead. In his latest commentary on Greyhive, Chris from Thin Line Defense Co argues that modern ballistic helmets like the Ops-Core SF and XP have closed the weight and comfort gap so dramatically that buying a bump helmet today is, for most users, just wasting money on a piece of kit you'll replace later. The core of his argument: bump helmets are PPE, not armor. They protect against bumps and scrapes and serve as a mounting platform for nods, lights, and comms — nothing more. Meanwhile, a current-generation ballistic helmet does everything a bump does, adds frag and ballistic protection, and now weighs within ounces of its non-rated cousin. If you're going to end up buying a ballistic helmet anyway — and most civilians eventually do once their use case drifts toward defensive or preparedness scenarios — the bump is a stepping stone that costs you duplicate mounts, duplicate pads, and a duplicate retention setup. Here's the full breakdown of why Chris says his own bump helmet has sat on the shelf for over a year. Key Takeaways The Ops-Core Next Gen SF ballistic weighs 4 lb 6 oz — only 7 oz more than the Ops-Core Next Gen bump at 3 lb 15 oz in matched configu…
