https://greyhive.com/videos/watch/b359472f-6369-4f2f-b864-68bfc9fc87b8 The Derya DY9 Island is a heavily ported 9mm that I honestly expected to feel cheap—and probably pretty snappy. So before adding a red dot, light, or anything else, I took it straight out of the box and started shooting. It did not behave the way I expected. This is my first range session with the Derya DY9 Island after meeting the Derya team at GunCon 2026. We start with the unboxing and take a look at the Island-style ported barrel and slide, factory fiber-optic sights, magwell, grip, controls, interchangeable backstraps and everything else included with the pistol. Then I leave it completely stock and start shooting. We work from 5 yards back to 20 yards using only the factory irons to see how the gun feels, how manageable the recoil is, and what kind of first-shot performance I can get without modifying anything. I also put the DY9 next to my compensated Glock 43X for a quick size reference, talk about why the Glock 19 would probably be the more appropriate comparison, and get into one of the biggest limitations for me as a left-handed shooter: controls and holster availability. And yes—we get one malfunction. Rather than immediately blaming the gun, I run more rounds through it to see whether I can make it happen again. There are definitely things I would change. The grip texture could use more coverage, the trigger is pretty average, and I wish the controls were fully ambidextrous. But the actual shooting experience—especially considering what I expected going in—was probably the biggest surprise of the day.
