Most people have a general idea of what those distances look like—but until you see them in an environment you actually live in, it can be difficult to understand just how close or far away they really are. In this video, we put that to the test. We measured out different distances in everyday environments where people commonly find themselves—places like grocery stores, parking lots, and gas stations—to provide a real-world visual reference for what those distances actually look like. From there, we took those same distances to the flat range and conducted drills at each one, giving us an opportunity to see how distance can dramatically change the dynamics of an encounter and how much training, experience, and familiarity with your equipment can matter. The goal of this video isn’t to predict exactly what a violent encounter will look like. It’s to provide perspective. In a dangerous active-shooter-type event, circumstances can be chaotic, distances can vary dramatically, and there may be very little time to process what’s happening. Having a realistic understanding of distance, your own capabilities, and the limitations of your equipment is an important part of becoming a capable and responsible Prepared Citizen. We believe training isn’t about chasing perfection or pretending you’re prepared for every possible scenario. It’s about identifying your weaknesses, building competence, developing sound judgment, and being better prepared to protect the people who depend on you. Whether you’re a new shooter or someone who has been training for years, we hope this experiment gives you a different perspective on distances you encounter in everyday life—and encourages you to invest the time and effort necessary to become a more capable, responsible, and Prepared Citizen.
