The last several years have left us asking a lot of questions about a lot of things. One prominent question was “where is our food coming from” and “what if we have a food shortage.” This, along with many stay-at-home/work-from-home situations, resulted in many Americans heading back outside, reconnecting with hunting, and some connecting with hunting for the first time. As a result, there was a surge in hunting and fishing licenses across much of the United States. For example, the State of Maine saw a 5% increase in women hunters in 2020; that’s more growth in one year than the previous five years combined. For some in the hunting community – this much-needed growth came at a time when the percentage of people hunting was on a downward trend. However, for others, there was frustration. More people hunting meant more people in the woods, which increased the pressure on scarcely existing available public resources, to begin with. This left many asking what we do with this many people on public grounds and wondering why their once isolated spot is suddenly filled with trucks. This video explains the growth in hunting and how much of that growth is supported through the Pittman-Robertson Act that funds the addition of new lands across the US and the sustenance and restoration of habitat to increase the opportunity for hunters as we grow in numbers.
