Front Bodylock
### Using the BodyLock Technique for Controlling a Resisting Subject
The BodyLock is a highly effective technique employed by law enforcement officers to gain control of a resisting subject. This method allows officers to secure the subject’s movement and transition them into a position conducive to safe handcuffing. Here’s how the BodyLock can be utilized:
#### Clinching and Controlling the Subject
1. **Initial Engagement**:
– Approach the subject and establish a BodyLock by wrapping your arms around their torso, securing them just above the hips. This position minimizes the subject’s ability to move freely and reduces the risk of injury to both the officer and the subject.
2. **Folding the Subject at the Waist**:
– With the BodyLock secured, apply pressure to fold the subject backward at the waist. This maneuver destabilizes their balance and allows for greater control.
– Guide the subject to the ground into a Mounted position, where you straddle their torso. This position provides leverage and stability, making it easier to manage their movements.
3. **Transitioning to a Handcuffing Position**:
– From the Mounted position, use your body weight to pin the subject’s torso while carefully redirecting their arms. Control one arm at a time, bringing it behind their back into a handcuffing position.
– Maintain pressure and control throughout the process to prevent the subject from resisting further.
#### Transitioning to the Subject’s Back
1. **Establishing Control**:
– If the initial clinch does not allow for folding the subject at the waist, use the BodyLock to maneuver yourself behind the subject.
– Secure the BodyLock tightly, ensuring your grip remains firm around their torso.
2. **Taking the Subject Down**:
– From this position, execute a controlled takedown by pulling the subject backward or guiding them forward, depending on the situation and surroundings.
– Once the subject is on the ground, position yourself on their back, ensuring your knees are on either side of their torso for stability.
3. **Handcuffing from the Back**:
– Use your body weight to maintain control of the subject’s upper body, limiting their ability to struggle.
– One arm at a time, bring the subject’s arms behind their back and into a handcuffing position.
– Ensure the handcuffs are applied securely but not excessively tight to prevent injury.
### Advantages of the BodyLock Technique
– **Safety**: The BodyLock reduces the risk of injury to both the officer and the subject by using leverage and body mechanics rather than brute force.
– **Control**: It provides a high degree of control over the subject’s movements, making it difficult for them to resist effectively.
– **Versatility**: The BodyLock can be adapted to various situations, allowing officers to transition between different control techniques as needed.
By mastering the BodyLock technique, officers can effectively manage resisting subjects, ensuring a safer resolution for all parties involved.
